Friday - Handball, Scavenger Hunt, School Dance

Friday was all about discovering Sucy, the "Sucyciens", and the activities that are popular here.  First up, a demonstration of a sport in which France has long been the reigning world champion - handball.  A group of elite (former National Team) and local players demonstrated and taught the basics to the kids (all - Sucy, CHS, and SHS), then got them to give it a try.  A good time and a lot of laughs were had by all.

After a picnic lunch, the students regrouped and were divided into teams for an "Amazing Race"-style scavenger hunt around Sucy.  Teams of 6 (3 schools mixed) were given a clue that would lead them to a spot of historical significance in Sucy and another clue.  They had to sign-in at check-points along the way indicating that they had solved each clue.  The race ended at a pleasant park surrounded by old stone farmyard walls.  The town hall and the historical society, which organized the event, distributed prizes to the winning teams - handmade Moroccan straw bags with some Sucy-branded goodies inside.

After the race, everyone went home to doll themselves up for the dance that was to take place Friday evening at the HS.  The host families brought all the food and served a buffet-style dinner and there was music (loud) and dancing (happy) and an all-around good time.  The whole shindig lasted from about 7-12pm (our dances NEVER last that long).  There were almost as many chaperones as students (well, there were about 80 students, so that might be an exageration) but in any case, the dancers were closely supervised by the French teachers, the American teachers, the principal, and a dozen or more Sucy parents.  I am sure there were many kids (and parents, and teachers) who needed to sleep in this morning and I congratulate the Sucy faculty and families for throwing such a successful and safe event for the kids.

For the weekend, there are all sorts of plans - from Eurodisney to shopping in Paris to more sight-seeing to dinner parties and more.  These activities are, of course, organized and supervised by the host families and are expected to be a great success.

Monday - back to Paris and the weather is supposed to be warm (relative to MA) and dry - yay!
